In 2015 the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) trained local volunteers and organized a professionally directed archaeological and historical study of two shipwrecks in Warwick, Rhode Island's Occupessatuxet Cove. The team then studied both ships' structures, and determined that they are twice the length of HMS Gaspee, the Royal Navy vessel that local Patriots burned at nearby Gaspee Point in 1772. Therefore this RIMAP team and the two shipwrecks of the study were named "Not the Gaspee" (NTG).

In the 7 years of the NTG study, the team determined that RI 2217, the site along the shore, is relatively stable, but that natural processes are slowly destroying RI 2218, the ship embedded in the sand of nearby Greene Island. Although RI 2217 and 2218 have not yet been identified, they are protected from human disturbance by state and federal laws. This Warwick team will continue to monitor the two "Not the Gaspee" sites, and in 2021 RIMAP added the search for HMS Gaspee to the team's list of research tasks.
